From the witness of the Uganda Martyrs in 1886 to a thriving parish today.
On 3rd June 1886, twenty-three Anglican converts and twenty-two Catholic converts were martyred at Namugongo on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II for refusing to renounce their Christian faith. From their ashes grew one of the most influential Christian communities in Africa.
Milestones
- 1886 — Martyrdom at Namugongo
- 1922 — First permanent Anglican chapel built on the site
- 1969 — Pope Paul VI visits Namugongo
- 1977 — Archbishop Janani Luwum martyred — the witness continues
- 2015 — Pope Francis pilgrimage
- Today — A parish of over 4,000 members, drawing pilgrims from across the world
